Sam Briggs and Josh Bridges Win 14.5

So this attempt at 14.5 shows a ton of heart and dedication. It also flat out scares me about the Open and just how accessible it is vs. how accessible it should be. Note: This submission thankfully was rejected as things go wrong around the 9 minute mark due to some technical difficulties such as “sunset”. Also the poor guy had to constantly tell the camera guy to back up and film him and the clock.

This post is late because I am still recovering from 14.5. This Open WOD was probably one of the hardest ones yet programmed. This one impacted everyone who was participating. There was no way to be “saved by the Bell”. You didn’t get to throttle back and let the AMRAP end your misery. This one was equal work for all, and if you didn’t quit it came down to how much you wanted to keep moving. It wasn’t a WOD that only a small % would get to a final movement or advance to a higher load or another round or AMRAP, it was simply about getting it ALL done. From that standpoint I love that HQ finally programmed a task priority or “for time” WOD into the Open. It’s long overdue.

I also know that this combo and amount of reps was so brutal for everyone that it will make a repeat reappearance in a future Games Open. Until that happens though I surely won’t be programming it. Especially since I received threats of being stabbed, shot, slapped, have my tires slashed, and even some people say they would probably quit the gym!

My plan is to build on this year’s Open to make it even bigger and better next year and to encourage as many people as possible to sign up and participate. It’s not about the competition so much as it is the accountability, the short term goal setting, and the added impetus to just “do more and suck less” week after week. During the spring and summer count on some Friday Night Lights special WOD’s, drinks, and maybe even a grill set-up.

This Open for me personally has been the most enjoyable to date. From the overall programming to the community building “Friday Night Lights” to the numerous PR’s gym-wide it has been an experience that I am bummed to see it end. This Open was also extremely therapeutic for me. Personally the past year for me has been rough. Having gone through a hand and knee surgery/recovery and then losing my Mom last spring derailed many of my goals for the year but I was able to stay on track to making progress and moving forward. Having to juggle the gym expansion under a tighter time line than we planned was stressful but really it was having my Dad pass away 9 days before the Open that left me in a bit of a “why me?” mode. Luckily I have a wife who knows everything about how to support, love, cheer me up and keep me positive. That said I was pretty “hollow” right after. With the excitement and anticipation each week of the Open workout announcement I found that the WOD’s and the environment of our gym really gave me something to focus on and dive into. The camaraderie of our entire SRCF family lifted my spirits and motivated me to do my best. Every workout gave me an opportunity to pour my stress into the WOD and approach it with a one effort shot. This outlet has more than helped me in dealing with the loss of both my parents and I am so much better off for it. Regardless of where my final finish is and if I reach my goal of advancing to the top 200 in the world for my Masters division, I know that I can be proud of my effort, the gym’s performance, and honestly say I can’t wait to do the Open all over again next year.

2k Max Effort

2k Row

All out max effort 2k row today was a good opportunity to focus on rowing technique. Managing your rower set-up, body position, racing start, stroke rate (SPM), and average pace is vital to knowing when to sprint to the finish. This one hurts the harder you row.

Tomorrow’s WOD:

Workout 14.5 aka “Thrusters Suck and Buck Furpees”

21-18-15-12-9-6-3 reps for time of:
Thrusters (95#/65#)
Burpees (Bar Facing)

1. Layout is taped on gym floor for individual barbell and bar-facing Burpee spots. We can run 12 at a time.
2. No “ghost riding” your bar! That means no dropping it from overhead and saying “Peace out!” This will result in possibly someone getting hurt and you doing a whole lot of extra penalty Burpees. Put it down under control.
3. Step overs or jumping without feet together is not RX’d. (Although apparently it’s RX to step UP on a box…) You also cannot jump over and then do a diagonal burpee. You must face the bar.
4. No time cap. Scale accordingly. This one will be tough!

5. Friday Night Lights: MOST IMPORTANTLY after the WOD is finished you are free to bring, share and consume refreshments and post workout libations!

For 14.5 it is probably not a great idea to coach/judge your spouse. I doubt you will get a lot of smiles like below:

Rona_Triple Extension

Snatch_Receiving Position - 1 Snatch_Receiving Position - 2

Day 2 of Oly complex work. Keep those shoulders over the bar with the chest up during the first pull of both the hang and coming up off the floor. Then sweep that bar back towards the hips as you explosively complete the 2nd pull and hit triple extension (top picture of Rona). Finish with a quick drop under into the overhead squat. Punch up on the bar and drop fast as you receive the bar.

CF Games:

14.5 Predictions? I’m guessing thrusters and burpees over a bar or to a target. I am hoping for burpees over the bar with either a “DT” or “Bear” type complex, or a progressively heavier thruster/squat clean and jerk mixed with burpees. Or maybe even handstand push-ups for the first time in the Open. Either way it will be fun to watch and horrible to do.

Come to the box at 5pm and we will stream the last live WOD announcement on the big screen in the lobby. The match-up this week includes 5 of the past CrossFit Games champs (Rich Froning vs. Graham Holmberg vs. Jason Khalipa; Sam Briggs vs. Annie Thorisdottir). It should be epic!

Hang Clean_Jon

Great clean work up front and a deceptive and spicy checkout. If it looks easy it isn’t!

Clean or Hang Clean focus areas: Weight in heels or midfoot, shoulders over the bar at set-up and during first pull, and lats are squeezed “on”. Accelerate in the middle and bring the bar to the hips with shoulders finishing behind the bar at the top of your extension or “jump”. Pull yourself under quickly and land with weight in the heels in a strong front squat with chest and elbows up with open hands. Bounce up out of the squat.

14_4 Start

Open competitors submit your results! Friday Night Lights was a success even with the longer times and increased logisitics. Thanks to everyone for the the patience and making it all work. This Open WOD was new, unique (the first time an Open WOD had more than three movements) and very challenging. Starting with the row and ending on the rings this gasser drains you one rep at a time.

Next week for 14.5 Friday Night Lights we will have some post Open libations available. Plan to stick around!
