Rest

I had a couple of opportunities for some great pics today but no card in the camera = fail. The rest pic above sums it up though.

FGB is a hard WOD. It’s max effort output for 5 minutes. Rest. Repeat three times. If you are hard enough to try the Championship edition it’s five times. This WOD came about in the early days of CrossFit at the original HQ (CF Santa Cruz). BJ Penn came to train there and this workout was put together to help simulate the effects of stepping into a ring. After completing this WOD the story is when Penn was asked what he thought of it he said “It’s like a fight gone bad.”

We will be programming this WOD again come September 17th for FGB 6. It will be our third year of hosting this annual challenge and fundraiser that all of CrossFit participates in worldwide. Go here for more details and plan to participate. We will host for not only our gym but several other boxes we plan to invite. The SRCF team is created. Go register and create your own fundraiser page and join the team. It’s going to be epic! You won’t want to miss it!

First off congrats to our Squatches Moe, Jill, Laura and Marc who all ran the Rock N’ Roll Marathon this weekend and to our resident Dirt Corps riders Matt, Jim and Dan who raced in the Mt. Hood Downhill race and placed one on the podium, one just off it and one with a broken suspension fork. Good times all!

This weekend we also hosted the CrossFit Gymnastics Trainers Course taught by Coach Sean Lind. Michelle, Rona, Rob, Jeremy, Pat from SRCF along with 12 others from all over the country attended this 2 day course and received a healthy dose of quality coaching, quality movement and company with quality people. It was cool to be the host and get to hang out with several new and old faces while learning how to build better ninjas.

As a group we spent two days learning basics, progressions, scalings, spotting and programming for what I suspect are just the tip of the pommel horse in gymnastics. The skills we practiced and began learning this weekend are so basic that what we consider hard are not even considered a skill in the gymnastics world (muscle-up anyone?). Although everyone wants the big powerful and sexy movements found in CrossFit it quickly became obvious that you cannot hope to achieve those without practicing the correct movement patterns frequently while building the requisite strength for the next movement. Learning that kipping pull-up or muscle-up or dip starts with building up the strength, skill, muscle memory, and the right range of motion to get to that next level. Earn that progression! The strength, power, balance and flexibility required are intimidating at first but once you practice and see how everything can be scaled it instantly becomes fun and you are just a giant kid in a playground. Personally I left with a longer list of things I suck at and need to improve. That’s the nature though of CrossFit, you don’t check a skill off your list without adding two more.

To Coach Sean thanks for the great weekend of fun and instruction and to everyone who attended we hope you thought it was well worth it.

Mark and Nadia (of CrossFit Belltown) knock out Regionals WOD 1:

2011 CrossFit Games Regional Workout 1

“Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat.  ~F. Scott Fitzgerald”

This week we will program a couple of the WOD’s from Regionals or some that are similar to give everyone some appreciation for the workouts and level of athleticism displayed by Mark and all the athletes at all the CF Games Regionals. Today was WOD 1.

As I reflect back on this past weekend at the NW Regionals I can’t help but think about where I personally was a year ago. Having just competed at the 2010 Regionals I was exhausted, ecstatic, and relieved to have it over. I was also determined. Determined to make it back.

Over the past year I have been working hard to return to the arena and give it another go. I had set some goals both personally and for our box. I made the following goals: qualify myself and at least one other as well as get a team qualified. Not knowing what the method CrossFit would have to get back to Regionals I assumed there would be a Sectional and it would be the typical weekend competition. As the Open was announced it threw me (and many in the community) for a loop. At first I’ll admit I was totally against it. I was mad. I wanted that competition out in the real “open” and I wanted (selfishly) for it to be a weekend grind. I wanted to have the community gather together and bring the whole box out to see a bunch of CF’ers go at it for multiple workouts a day. Once I put that aside and accepted that it was the Open no matter what, as a box we decided to try and do it right.

We hosted each and every Open WOD week after week and did our best to do it with integrity, community, and hard ass effort. The Open grew on me. Sure some things were frustrating but the box participation was great and the spirit it built even better. During that time I joked that I wasn’t quite sure I really wanted to go back to Regionals. As the weeks wore on and the attempts at each Open WOD piled up, I felt pretty confident I would make it. I was sure the WOD’s would get more technical or heavy and allow me to stay in the top 60. As the Open drew to a close, I watched my name fall from the low to mid 50’s to 59th to the 63rd spot after PR’ing Open WOD 11.6 for the third time on Sunday in the final hours. I was honestly crushed. Mad at myself more than anything. I felt like my training was all off and that I missed a huge component for the past year. I was bitter at myself for not pushing harder during the Open and wondered to Michelle if I was too confident and failed to leave it out there each workout. I pored over the stats and scoreboard. I overanalyzed everything about each one of my WOD’s for about a week. It was kind of a private pity party. Then I kind of moved on as I was able to train again without the stress of the Open. It got fun again.

The plus side was that two of OUR good people in Mark and Pat qualified for the next level with Mark going to Regionals and Pat to the Masters. Our team just barely missed qualifying. That made me feel great and also somewhat salved the wound. After judging this weekend and watching Mark represent so well I can honestly say I am recharged to chase it again for another year. Serving as a judge gave me a front row seat to the action. It put me on the floor next to some flat out amazing athletes and a few friends. It made me a witness to the effort and emotion that makes CrossFit so damn hard and so much fun for me. I love coaching and I love to see people who are as determined to make the Games push themselves to that point that so many won’t go to. I love the sport that it is becoming. That intensity made it real again for me and has left me with renewed vigor to get stronger, get faster and get fitter than I am now.

So back to the drawing board for me. And for our box. I am making up my plan of attack for what will hopefully yield a different result for next year. My goals: See SRCF have a huge participation in the 2012 Open, personally get back to Regionals, qualify at least 2 individuals and qualify a team. If it doesn’t work? Hell I’ll just say it’s part of my run to the Masters in 8 years!

Reebok’s partnership (and sponsorship) with CrossFit is evolving quickly from sponsoring the CF Games to building a CF Box at the company headquarters to making apparel. Now they are rolling out shoes and Olympic Lifting shoes. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the models that were on display at the NorCal Regionals this weekend. Part Inov-8, part Minimus, with what looks like a slightly thicker but still flat sole. What do you think?

Memorial Day WOD

From CrossFit.com: “Murph” is dedicated to Navy SEAL LT Michael Murphy, 29 of New York, who was killed in Afghanistan in June of 2005. This workout was one of his favorites and he’d named it “Body Armor”. It is referred to as “Murph” in honor of the focused warrior and great American who wanted nothing more than to serve his country and the people who make it what it is.

He is a Medal of Honor recipient. Read the link above for the harrowing account of his heroic actions.

Today was the “Memorial Day Murph” Hero WOD Tribute. If you wanted to buy a shirt or donate you can do so here.

39 of us honored a fallen Hero today on this Memorial Day. Either by completing “Murph” or a different Hero WOD by substitute. Thank you to all who came together today to share in something that is just a little more than a tough workout.

Teri and Moe push pressing and snatching:

Teri and Moe_Push Press and Snatch

So the weather didn’t cooperate on Saturday as this WOD originally had wall climbs (at a lower rep scheme) instead of push press. After Marc pointed out he was ice skating up and down the wall prior to the WOD we made a snap decision to sub in push presses. Turned out to still be a tough WOD with the same desired effect I had in mind. Don’t let the light snatch fool you, this one was deceiving.

Tomorrow will be our Murph Memorial Day Challenge! It’s full at 0930 so if you want to come then come at 1030 and we will fit you in.

Today’s WOD was a recent main site workout from CrossFit.com that a few of your coaches tested out recently. It had the same effect as above so I felt compelled to share. This week is shaping up to be a good one with a “Challenging” Saturday and “Murph” on Monday.

Speaking of Monday, as it is Memorial Day we will only hold one class at 1000. We will be participating in the “Murph Challenge” and honoring his true American Hero and Medal of Honor Winner that is one of the first Hero WOD’s in CrossFit.

  • Monday 5/30 at 10am
  • We will be doing the Murph Hero WOD for Memorial Day
  • Who was Murph? A Medal of Honor recipient that was killed in Afghanistan in 2005; his story and that of Seal Team 10 is incredible. Read about him here.
  • Sign up and register, donations are not required but if you want to then go online at the above link (donations go to three different charities)

Movement and Mobility:

For those who are signed up this Wed. at 7pm is the first Mobility and Movement class with Rona. If you haven’t signed up and want to go here for more info. We have a few spots left!

Update on the 2011 CrossFit Games: Individual Movement Standards and Rules for Regionals

At the link above are the specific rules for all the Regional workouts and how they will be scored and judged. I have to say I love how strict they are as described to both ensure good range of motion and proper movement. Eliminating competitors instantly for being unable to complete some of the advanced movements is also right on.
